PSA: Stop Asking "When Are You Going to Have A/Another Kid".

PSA: If you know a young couple who either does not have a baby or has a toddler and you think they should have a baby / another baby, please don’t ask them when they are going to start or if they are going to have another.

Why?

Because if they wanted a/another child they would have had one and announced it to you. Since they haven’t, they either:

  • Don’t want a/another child.

  • Want one but can’t have one.

  • Want one but it isn’t a good time.

No, your comments aren’t cute. No, it’s not going to make them change their minds. If anything, if they want kids but they are the 10-15% of people in the United States that have difficulty with conceiving (statistic from the National Institute of Health) your questions are a painful reminder of what they don’t have.

Have you ever sobbed uncontrollably because you wanted to be pregnant but weren’t, even after multiple tries over multiple months? I have. It’s not a fun place to be...

Have you ever had people asking you when you are going to have a baby/another baby, while secretly you are trying, but can’t and you want to burst into tears every time it’s brought up? I have.

I know lots of women who want children but can’t have one.

When you ask about a couples family planning status at best, your comments are annoying. At worst, they are hurtful. So please, don’t ask people when they are going to have a kid or when they are going to give their toddler a sibling, because if it is going to happen for them it will.
